Dr. Mark A. Rieger Volunteers in Egypt for the ISMS Operation Kids: Medical Mission

This past March, Dr. Mark A. Rieger joined a team of 20 professional medical volunteers in Benha, Egypt, for the International Surgical Mission Support’s (ISMS) 14th mission. The mission was conducted in The Benha Children’s Hospital approximately 2 hours north of Cairo. The ISMS team instructed the hospital’s staff in modern techniques in medicine and patient care that have dramatically changed the way they practice.
The team complete over 70 complex and varied surgeries, ranging from Plastic, Orthopedic, General, and ENT surgeries in just seven days. The success of the mission not only provided excellent medical/surgical care for children in need, but also educated the local doctors and nurses by giving them the knowledge to improve their skills. The ISMS team also donated all remaining equipment and supplies to the hospital’s staff to help them provide better care to their patients in the future. The mission enabled the ISMS group to work together side by side to become trusted colleagues and friends through this collaboration, bridging the cultural differences through medical care.
